In February, I had the privilege of organizing the art exhibition held during Authorcon VI. It went so well that Brian Keene and Joe Ripple have asked me to do it again for Authorcon VII in 2027!
Because the Authorcon guests had expressed so much interest in participating as artists, I am open to submissions. Some folks think I’m going to regret this, and maybe that’ll be true in some ways (ha!), but I would much rather open the opportunity to everyone rather than keep it invite only. Even if that means a lot more work on my part. Plus, we have a larger room to work with, so let’s fill up these walls with some art! I’m excited to discover new artists!
SO here it is! An open call for submissions:
Fighting Real Monsters Art Exhibition at Authorcon VII

I am looking for gallery-quality works from real, human artists. Not a professional artist? Don’t underestimate yourself! No, I probably can’t accept everything that will be submitted, but I want to, so please give your art a chance and submit.
Please read through the ENTIRE submission guidelines before sending questions. And please direct all questions to me, Red Lagoe, at ArtShowSTC@gmail.com
All the guidelines are below and in this pdf: Authorcon Art Exhibition Guidelines 2027
About the Art Show:
AUTHORCON VII will be held in the Doubletree Hotel, Williamsburg, VA March 5-7, 2027. Please see this website for full details. The Art Exhibition is a very small portion of this event. It will be set up like a gallery in a large meeting room (separate from the vendor space), and it will be open Friday evening through Saturday night during the convention. Original art will be hung on the walls, displayed on easels, etc. This is not a vendor floor, it’s a gallery. That means it’s set up like a show room and folks may purchase original works at the end of the event.
Artist Participation Expectations:
There is no fee to submit art for consideration. Any art that is accepted for the exhibition will be priced by the artist. Sales of gallery art will be handled by the individual artists on the evening of the reception, Saturday, March 6.
Scares That Care requests that artists donate a minimum of 10% of total gallery sales back to the organization after the show, which is a modest percentage compared to most traditional art galleries.
THEME: FIGHTING REAL MONSTERS
Scares That Care® has been FIGHTING REAL MONSTERS for over 20 years by raising funds that go directly into the hands of breast cancer fighters, burn victims, and families with children fighting for their lives.
Throughout history and legend, monsters have taken many forms from writhing beasts to elegant ghostly apparitions. While many argue these creatures are no more than figments forged in the depths of human imagination, monsters are real. They lurk in the crevices of the unknown. They can live within the hearts of strangers, neighbors, and even loved ones. They can slither inside our bodies as sickness, and they can execute madness upon our minds.
Monsters are everywhere, pervasive and inescapable, and all we can do… is fight.
One of the ways we fight this darkness is through the power of art.
Artists are invited to submit works that can be dark in nature or beautiful art that shines through the abyss. Works do not have to be a direct representation of the theme, nor do the works have to be newly created pieces.
ABSOLUTELY NO A.I. GENERATED ART WILL BE ACCEPTED
Limitations: Please keep in mind that this event is operating out of a hotel meeting room, so we are limited to what we can hang on the walls with Command Strips. We cannot drill into the walls or hang things from the ceiling. I can accommodate some larger, heavier works by displaying on easels. On a case-by-case basis, we can try to accommodate some unique displays. Please note that the artists will be responsible for the delivery of the work to and from the show.
Number of works: Artists may submit up to FIVE works for consideration.
Medium: A variety of mediums are encouraged, including paitings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital art (framed, gallery-quality prints of digital art only), knitwork, etc.
All 2D artwork that’s accepted will need to be framed before the show (lightweight frames without glass are ideal). Paintings on stretched canvas will not require a frame.
Deadline: Before the end of the day, JAN 1, 2027, please submit photographs of each piece (up to five works) along with their titles, dimensions, and (if it’s over five pounds) approximate weight. Digital images should be a high enough resolution that allows us to zoom in and see details (brush strokes, linework, etc).
SUBMIT ART to Red Lagoe using this GOOGLE FORMS SUBMISSION FORM.
Please be patient and kind. Red may not be able to accept everything. Space is limited. And please don’t feel like you need to rush! All submissions will be considered fairly; even the last-minute submissions will have a chance. All replies will be sent by January 30.
If you have any questions about the art show, please do not reach out to the STC event organizers. They have a lot on their plate already. Address all art show questions to Red Lagoe at ArtShowSTC@gmail.com. You may also reach out to Red on socials @RedLagoe; however, email is the best way to ensure the message is received.
I look forward to seeing your art!
